Abbie's Open
Upcoming Disc Golf Events

Abbie's Open was the first event in this year's Duck Golf series, playing a modified version of the BC Open course at Queen Elizabeth Park, approximately 90 participants tested their skill. Despite a forecast of rain, the weather held, and an exhausting 36 holes ensued.

If you actually bothered to read all of those names, you'll notice that mine is on there. I'm happy to say that I really enjoyed my first Disc Golf tournament experience, and would recommend it to everyone. The most important thing to remember is that you're basically committing the whole day, so be prepared to do that.

As an Ultimate player, who has taken new players to Ultimate tournaments, I would not recommend Disc Golf tournaments in the same way. Because Disc Golf is not a team sport, and players of similar skill levels are grouped together there is less opportunity for instruction. That's not really true, there's less opportunity for practice. As much as fellow players are likely willing to help you with tips and suggestions, fundamentally Disc Golf tournaments lack the "sideline" where you can throw with a more experienced player and learn very quickly. Will your game improve through tournament play? Almost certainly, but perhaps not as quickly as you would like. By all means play in tournaments and become a better player, just have realistic expectations.
